After claiming the 2020 NBA championship, the Los Angeles Lakers decided to undergo a slight revamp in the offseason. After getting rid of guys like JaVale McGee, Rajon Rondo, and Dwight Howard, they indulged in players that would help bolster and add new dimensions to their offense.
6th MOTY candidates Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell made their way to LA. 12-year vet Marc Gasol signed a 2-year deal with the Lakers as well. Looking to contribute to a Lakers championship, just as his older brother Pau did, Marc was brought on to play off LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
However, after having the first half of the season down the hatchet, the Marc Gasol experiment hasn’t been all too fruitful for the Lakers.
The Lakers look to add another big man to their squad
News of the Lakers being active in the market for another big man isn’t new. Reports have been surging for weeks now, connecting various big-men in potential buyout situations to the Lakeshow.
Guys such as Hassan Whiteside, Demarcus Cousins, and most recently, Andre Drummond have been linked to the LeBron James-led team. The Athletic’s Sam Amick writes:
“Sources say they’re in the market for another big, in large parts because the Marc Gasol experience hasn’t gone as well as hoped. It’s never a bad idea to load up on options. First, we have to wait and see if this is going to be a trade or a buyout.”
Amick then calls for former Spurs big LaMarcus Aldridge to take a look at the Lakers. He eventually admits he would love to see Damian Lillard and Aldridge reunite in Portland.
The Lakers’ biggest problem at the moment, a problem that has been accentuated in Anthony Davis’s absence, is their lack of interior defense and rebounding. Getting a big body to bang down low would be a great addition to the team. Bigs that gobble up rebounds like Whiteside and Drummond could be beneficial to the purple and gold.
