Vince Carter, Who Dunked Over a 7ft 2” Center in the 2000 Olympics, Had His First One as a 7th Grader, On a ‘Double Rim’
Dunking is perhaps one of the most entertaining parts of basketball. And, perhaps the greatest dunker of all time is Vince Carter.
The former NBA superstar was renowned for his ability to get to the rim, pulling off some amazing dunks. Like the ones, he did in the 2000 NBA Dunk Contest.
There can be no denying his high-flying abilities. After all, he’s been doing this since he was a kid. To be more precise since he was a 5’6″ seventh grader.
Vince Carter had his first in-game dunk in the seventh grade on a double rim
Any player who can dunk, always remembers their first time. Whether they are professional players or just amateurs.
The same goes for Vince Carter. Air Canada is fondly remembered for its sensational dunking ability. Well for him, his first dunk came when he was in the 7th grade when he dunked on a double rim at the height of 5’6″.
“In the 7th grade, I dunked for the first time. This was junior high, I was a 7th grader and everyone else was in the 9th grade. I was probably 5’6″. But at the time I was one of those visualizers. I worked at it and I’d sleep on it, and visualize what I’d have to do to dunk a basketball. You got a get over the rim, you got to get high enough…those little things, and then, 7th grade, I was on the break. I tried it, and I dunked it!”
It must have been an incredible moment for young Vince. One that is engraved in his memory for life. However, it is far from being his greatest dunk ever.

Carter probably has one of the greatest highlight reels in the history of the NBA and international basketball combined. He’s had many great moments and even more great dunks. But, perhaps his piece de resistance was when he dunked over 7’2″ center Fredric Weiss at the 2000 Olympics.

A truly remarkable dunk, from a truly remarkable player. There was no stopping Air Canada when it was time for take off.
