"When Michael Jordan Came Out": For 18 Years, LeBron James Was Frustrated By All-Star Snub in His Rookie Year

The human ego is a funny thing. In the NBA, more often than not, rookies are subject to mistreatment. And while it may look and sound funny, it is not a good thing when it comes to stalling greatness. Both Michael Jordan and LeBron James were subject to it. MJ didn’t receive a single pass from his teammates and LeBron James wasn’t selected in the All-Star game. He dominated the rookie game but he was hurt, even when he was asked about it 18 years later, the hurt was apparent.

James not getting selected was purely an act of sabotage. He has had 19 all-star appearances in his career. The most of anyone. However, he could have had 20 and achieved perfection. It is a blemish on an otherwise outstanding career.

The seniors in the NBA at the time, the already established stars didn’t want to play with a rookie. This was seen as a sort of disrespectful remark. But it stifled greatness. It is an unspoken rule and even players like Luka Doncic have missed out on entering the all-star game in their rookie season.

18 years after getting snubbed, LeBron James was asked about his snub, and after all these years, it was clear that he wasn’t happy.

“Still kinda irks me a little bit”: LeBron James was dejected by the all-star snub, even after 18 years

18 years is a long time. But for some, it might not be long enough. LeBron James had not forgotten about his all-star snub back in 2003. When speaking to The Athletic in 2021 he said: “Still kinda irks me a little bit, but I got over it.”.

James was dejected and rightfully so. But, he decided not to pay heed and instead test out the real gravity of his star power. He headlined the rookie game and obliterated the opposition. Before the start of the game, TNT announcer, Dick Stockton said, “The first time we’ve had such a glittering headliner as a rookie,”.

He added, “They didn’t have the rookie game when Michael Jordan came out and a lot of the other greats, but they do now.”. The rookie games were seen as a welcome addition. A place where the young blossoming talent could shine.

It came for the first time in 2003. A place where players like LeBron could show their brilliance.

The changes since and why LeBron’s legacy will never be tarnished

For all that’s worth in his rookie year, LeBron was voted 4th among Eastern Conference guards. And the archaic voting system and selection based on positions still exist.

Although, coaches now have the ability to fill out the rest of the roster as they see fit. As for the voting system, it is still an unnecessary crutch. As for LeBron James, he has filled out his resume quite impressively.

4 titles, 4 MVPs, and he is the all-time scoring leader. He wears his crown proudly. Perhaps, there is a jewel missing in the form of being selected in an all-star game for his entire career. But it is one he cannot add to his glittering headpiece. And for that, he will always be unsatisfied.
