Years After Forcing Dennis Rodman to Spend a Night in Jail, Shirley Wasn’t Allowed to Meet Her Granddaughter Trinity Rodman
Dennis Rodman‘s eccentric lifestyle and erratic behavior can be attributed to his tough upbringing as a child. He lived with his single mother who was hard on him from a young age and he never got over how he was treated. As mentioned in the book ‘I Should Be Dead By Now‘ released in 2006, Rodman never forgave her and refused to introduce her to his youngest children, including Trinity Rodman.
Shirley Rodman was a single mother who was divorced and responsible for Dennis and his two sisters. As a working mother, she barely had time for her kids and was especially negligent towards the former NBA player. Rodman claimed to have never received a hug from his mother and was also kicked out of the house.
Dennis Rodman’s relationship with his mother
Dennis Rodman has had a turbulent lifestyle that began at a very young age. He did not have the best relationship with his mother. Shirley used difficult measures to deal with Rodman’s actions which included leaving him in jail. She also kicked him out of the house at the age of 19 to fend for himself. The Chicago Bulls star never forgave her and mentioned the same in his book. Here is an excerpt:
“And there are unhealed wounds—tough love gone wrong, you might say. When I was 19, my mother let me cool my heels in jail overnight when I got caught stealing some watches. Later, she kicked me out of the house, trying to shock some sense into me, and I was homeless for months. She was just a hardcore black woman. Now I know “it was for my own good,” but I’m not sure I will ever be able to forgive or forget.”
Dennis did not take well to his mother’s actions and could never seem to forget what she did to him. As a result, he refused to introduce his three children to their grandmother. This also included professional soccer player Trinity Rodman. He referred to his family as estranged and went on to describe the current relationship between them in his book. Here is what he wrote:
“Today I guess you could call my family “estranged.” My mother has never even seen my three youngest kids, and I can’t remember the last time the family spent Christmas—or any holidays— together.”
Dennis Rodman found happiness with his second family
When Dennis Rodman befriended 12-year-old Byrne Rich, he did not know he was getting a new family in return. The Riches appreciated Dennis for helping Byrne through a tough time and decided to become his surrogate parents. Dennis was 22 years old and did not have a cordial relationship with his mother.
The Riches helped Dennis through college, and he appreciated everything he received from them. However, the media’s portrayal of Pat Rich being Rodman’s second mother did not sit well with Shirley. She took offense to the narrative and decided to lash out publicly. According to her, she did the best she could raising the basketball star and had a tough time doing it.
