"You're setting yourself up for heartbreak": Draymond Green Prepared to Part Ways with the Warriors, Understands it's the 'Business'

Draymond Green has been a stable defensive pillar for the Golden State Warriors in the last decade. He has helped the team with his tenacity and aggressiveness. When all is said and done, Green will be a certified GSW legend. He has given his all to this team. But at the end of the day, it is a business.

A lucrative business that relies on young athletes. With Draymond getting older by the second and his performance taking a hit, he knows there is a possibility his journey with the Warriors is coming to an end.

In his 11th season with the team, Draymond Green feels it is highly likely he might not remain with the Warriors next season. In an interview with NBCS, Dray revealed it all to Edward Razo.

Draymond Green prepared to not have a future with GSW

Since 2018-19, Draymond Green has consistently performed at the same level. The 6ft 6″ forward, who was once a defensive beast, has now become a hollow shell of his former self. It’s not that he is not a great player anymore but Dray just doesn’t have the same impact on offense and defense as he used to.

Green, in his recent interview with NBCS, acknowledged this change and the potential consequences of it. While speaking to Edward Razo, Green claimed that he understood the business aspect of the game. He realized that despite all his contributions, the team’s survival and growth were priorities.

Green: “Quite frankly, the writing is on the wall. “I understand the business. We tend to get into this mindset that someone owes us something because of what we’ve accomplished. You’d be an idiot to walk around feeling that way. Like, I feel like you’re just setting yourself up for failure. You’re setting yourself up for heartbreak. You’re setting yourself up for disappointment as opposed to saying, ‘No, let me learn this business.’ If you don’t get to know the business, then you can be blindsided and be like, ‘Oh, man, everything I’ve done there. I thought I’d be there forever.’ I would love to be. I understand the luxury tax. I understand you got these young guys and contracts up, and they have to get paid. Like, I understand all of those things. And so, just for me, that’s what I mean by the writings on the wall.”

Will the Warriros trade Draymond?

The Warriors do need better big men and more stable defenders. Their transition defense has suffered after Draymond’s performances became less impactful.

In his recent games, the 6ft 6″ forward has seemed frustrated. But it seems he is aware of the possibilities. His team needs a forward that can play high-level basketball consistently for the next few seasons. Unfortunately, Draymond is not at that level anymore. So, it is highly likely the Warriors may trade him after this season.
