Last season, the USC Trojans brought their eighth Heisman Trophy home, becoming the first institution in college history to do so. All thanks to the dynamic quarterback calling plays from the center, Caleb Williams. His popularity has skyrocketed in the sports fraternity. In fact, it has reached a point where experts believe he might get picked first overall in the 2024 NFL draft.

Next year, the Washington native will become eligible to contend on the grand stage of pro football. Like Alabama product Bryce Young, who dominated this year’s draft, Williams is expected to follow a similar path and find a place in the top 3. Analyzing this situation closely, former NFL quarterback Carson Palmer expressed his opinion in a recent episode of the Rich Eisen Show.
Is Caleb Williams next year’s first-round pick?
Ever since the 21-year-old arrived at USC, he has become a celebrity among his peers. Williams was a consensus five-star recruit from Washington, racking up spectacular records in high school. In his first year of college, the gunslinger played for the Oklahoma Sooners and later transferred to USC. Along with the Trojans, he won the coveted Heisman Trophy and re-established his brand value.
While speaking about his greatness, the former USC star and NFL legend Carson Palmer detailed his skillset. “I think he’d be the number one pick in this draft. Unquestionably. I think it’d be him, and then Bryce, and then one of the one of the other guys, but Caleb is a whole package.” Palmer said on the Rich Eisen show.
“He’s big enough. He’s fast enough. He’s quick enough. He’s got so much velocity on the ball in the pocket. He’s got even more velocity on the ball outside the pocket. He’s mature beyond his years, and he’s got a chance to go into next year’s draft as a two-time Heisman winner,” he added.
Indeed, Williams’ resume looks quite impressive, and he can easily compete for the first position. Eisen believes the quarterback has similar traits to that of Patrick Mahomes. Despite tearing his hamstring in a game, Williams continued to play and score touchdowns.
Caleb Williams has an incredible college record
The quarterback won the Heisman trophy after he scored 544 first-place votes and 2,031 points to become a USC legend forever. Last season, he showcased great performance, recording 4.075 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. As a result, he set a new USC record for total offense with 4,447 yards, per The Guardian.

His ability to improvise and rush deep down the field makes him a dual-threat quarterback. The youngster credits his parents for inflicting essential qualities on him and sacrificing their needs to make him a successful athlete.
