Russell Wilson and his saga with the Denver Broncos has taken an interesting turn this week. All season long, the Broncos QB has been on the receiving end of strong criticism for his subpar performance, something which he himself has admitted at times. However, it seems that someone has crossed a line, for his teammates are now out to defend their captain.

This comes in the wake of former Broncos player Shannon Sharpe’s rant on his show ‘Undisputed’. Where he had some not-so-very-kind words for Wilson. He even claimed that no matter how much Wilson said he’s chummy with his teammates, they are “seething inside.” When the clip went viral, it feels like Wilson’s teammates finally had to let their thoughts loose.
The first one to take to Twitter was wide receiver Jerry Jude, who said he’s never had a teammate motivate him more than Russell Wilson has. Tim Patrick, Garrett Bolles, and Kendall Hinton followed suit and voiced their praises for the QB. Former Denver running back Melvin Gordan chipped in too, and called the criticism for Wilson “slander beyond crazy”.
Teammates under the spotlight after defending Russell Wilson en masse
While their heroic stand against Wilson’s haters is commendable, it seems to have sparked yet another controversy in the NFL community. Former Indianapolis Colts kicker Pat McAfee talks about the stoic defense on his show ‘The Pat McAfee Show’. However, one of his co-hosts raises serious doubts about the Tweets. It seems the timing is far too odd for these to not be orchestrated.
McAfee and his co-hosts are torn on whether or not these reactions are genuine. What they agree on, is that it’s time for Wilson himself to start addressing some of these falsehoods. How he does that, is his choice. However, it’s now become necessary after his teammates have come out in his support. Wilson can no longer afford to hide and must face the onslaught head-on if he wants to save his image.
While that happens, he will also be hoping that the new head coach with fix things for him in Denver. A fresh, outside perspective of his performances, with an idea of how to fix them, is what both Wilson and the Broncos need. They cannot and will not bench him, so the only option the Broncos have is to fix whatever problem he has, and bring him back to the superstar stature he was at before it all came crashing.
