Years Before Getting Fired Midseason, Former Jaguars HC Urban Meyer Had Blatantly Insulted Bengals QB Joe Burrow; "Throw Like a Girl"

Coach Urban Meyer has been a controversial figure in football for a number of years. He made headlines in 2021 when he was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars mid-season for his off-field shenanigans and inability to guide his unit to wins. Moreover, Meyer is known for his precarious and brutal coaching style and Joe Burrow had reportedly been on the receiving end of it during his days as Ohio State quarterback.

Earlier this year, it was revealed in a report that coach Urban Meyer used to hurl insults and go personal at Joe to make him a “great player” as per his former assistant. Ohio State at that time had three-star QBs competing for a starting role and Joe Burrow saw no future in it when he had Urban Meyer at his tail hurling insults.

Urban Meyer Used To Brutally Insult Joe Burrow at Ohio State

Joe Burrow, who is now a QB sensation in the NFL, didn’t have it easy during his days in Ohio State from 2015 to 2017. It was revealed that coach Urban Meyer, years before getting fired by the Jaguars during his first season as NFL coach, was very brutal in his approach to mentoring Burrow. In a video that went viral a few months ago, Meyer’s former assistant drew the curtains on the entire situation that took place at Ohio State.

“He would get personal,” the former assistant said. “Joe Burrow would throw an interception and he’d be like ‘Wow call your dad, maybe they’ll take you at Ohio U’. Like he’d bring your family into it. This man was an (expletive), but it was all calculated. He didn’t care. He was trying to make Joe Burrow a great player.”

Freshman Burrow was even once told by Meyer that “you throw like a little girl.” Not only that, he even told the future Bengals star that he was at best a “D2 quarterback.” One can only imagine how brutal Meyer has been in his coaching and makes one wonder whether it really had a positive impact on the players, since later Burrow left Ohio State for a successful season with LSU.

Burrow’s Success With LSU

It was no surprise when Burrow left for LSU in 2018. The QB competition between Burrow, Dwayne Haskins, and T. Barrett left the young QB with just a backup role at Ohio State. However, Burrow believed in his talent and made a big decision to switch to LSU under Ed Orgeron.

“Well, I came here to play,” Burrow had said as an Ohio State backup QB. “I didn’t come here to sit on the bench for four years. I know I’m a pretty good quarterback and I want to play somewhere.” His two years as LSU QB shaped him to become one of the best in the NFL.

At LSU, Burrow revealed that the coaches worked with him to create “historically effective game plans.” Post that, Burrow went to achieve insurmountable success at the college level and is set to scale great heights in NFL too.
