“You catch Mac Jones in the locker room quoting some Future and Lil Baby”: Cam Newton impressed with his Patriots QB competitor after meeting him at the training camp

The Patriots got their QB of the future after drafting Mac Jones with the 15^th overall pick. But Jones will have to compete with Cam Newton before he becomes the successor to the Brady era in New England. However, early into the preseason and Newton is already loving his new teammate.

Newton had a rough first season in Foxborough. As a passer, the Auburn alum completed 66 percent of his passes but threw for only eight touchdowns. With 10 interceptions, he finished the year with a negative TD: INT ratio for the first time in his career.

Despite a bad season as a passer, Bill Belichick and the Patriots renamed Cam Newton as the team’s starter for Week 1 for 2021. But since New England drafted Mac Jones in the spring, there’s little doubt the 15th overall pick will take over as QB1 sooner or later.

However, even though Newton knows his job is on the chopping block, he seems to be getting along great with his new QB teammate.

Cam Newton says Mac Jones is “cool like the other side of the pillow”

On Friday, Newton described Jones as an even-keel guy who he’s willing to support.

“Oh man, [he’s] cool like on the other side of the pillow, you know what I’m saying? You never know when he’s really down himself, you don’t really necessarily know when he’s up either,” Newton said, via Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. “He’s real cool. I’m surprised [with] his knowingness of hip-hop music. You catch him in the locker room every time quoting some Future, some ‘Baby.”

“But those are things that you’ve just got to learn with time. We had an opportunity to meet in OTAs but you don’t really get it. And then it’s still another curve that’s going to get during game times. It’s good that we get preseason games and things like that so you’ll know these live bullets.”

“So I’m pretty much here for him just like Brian [Hoyer] is here for him. And I know it’s reciprocated on all fronts.”

Newton should have the job on lock for the early part of the season. But Jones will be right on his heels. However, regardless of the battle on the field, it should fun to see the 2 QBs off the pitch.
