Pep Guardiola furious with concept of Super League

Pep Guardiola has explained his concerns over the concept of the Super League.

Pep Guardiola has disaccorded the Super League – rumoured to kick off in the next few years. The Spanish International says it would ‘kill’ domestic football and England board would not concur because of the high culture and heritage.

Following documents collected by Der Spiegel, plans for top European clubs to form a breakaway league has been exposed. Teams including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Juventus, PSG, AC Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City have an agreement in place according to the report. But, the European body have vehemently denied those allegations.

In an interview with Catalan newspaper Ara, Guardiola said: “If it happens we’ll kill the leagues. If Barca and Madrid go and they do not play against Espanyol, who will follow the league? The Spanish league will die.

“In England they are very intelligent, the grounds of the fourth division are full. England will not let this essence of local football die.”

The Manchester City boss has portrayed the situation which would see small clubs struggling for revenue. In a league consisting of big sides, those clubs would survive because they would be brought into loomlight, more often than not. On than these two elements, various influencing factors would play a huge role.

Guardiola has failed to deliver in the Champions League at Manchester City, getting knocked out in the Round of 16 once and Quarterfinals twice in this three-year stint. Albeit those hurdles, the Spaniard has backed the tournament to be held in the same format.

“Part of the greatness of the Champions League is that it is not every Sunday,” said Guardiola. “If games were every week it would lose its charm.

“Barcelona v Espanyol is very necessary for the city. And the more Catalan teams in La Liga, the better.

“If we kill the domestic leagues, nobody will be interested in watching teams that do not have the chance to go to the European league.” added Pep.

Here’s how Twitter has reacted..
