Premier league title race: Liverpool and Manchester City could be involved in rare play-off game to decide Premier league champions

Premier league title race: Liverpool and Manchester City could be involved in a rare play-off game to decide Premier league champions if they match on stats on Sunday.

Manchester City had a sigh of relief after Vincent Kompany’s stunner against Leicester City brought them back on the top of the points table.

Since then, the road to glory for the Citizens look quite simple as they only need to register a win against Brighton to lift the title on Sunday.

However, things are not easy for Manchester City as they seem, because the final matchday of the Premier league always offer surprises.

Whereas, Liverpool are in a phenomenal form and are beating all the odds against them. The 4-0 historic comeback against Barcelona in the return leg of the Champions league semifinal is the latest example.

The fear of losing the lead on Monday almost engulfed Manchester City against Leicester City and this nervousness can cost the Citizens title on Sunday.

It is known that Liverpool need to win the match against the Wolverhampton and require Pep Guardiola’s side to not gain any positive result in order to win the title.

However, in an unlikely event, there is a possibility of Liverpool Vs Manchester City play off after the last matchday, if Liverpool draws against Wolves by 4-4 and Manchester City gets a 4-0 beating by Brighton.

Hence, it will bring both sides equal to each other in terms of points obtained, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded in the league this season and the English FA will have to organize “the Premier league play-off” at the Wembley stadium to decide the title winners.

The possibility of these results are minimal as Brighton have only scored three goals in a game twice this season, never scoring four and beating England’s best team with this margin sounds as a distant dream.

Never before, Premier league had to organize a play-off to decide a title. Although, there were provisional plans for a play-off match in 1995/96 season, when Manchester United and Newcastle United were vying for the title, although the Red Devils won the title with four points clear.
