However, there has been a pattern to this madness. The team was already deteriorating well before either of Cristiano Ronaldo or Zinedine Zidane booked their planes out of the Spanish Capital. The trophy merely acted as a plaster on the cracks.
Real Madrid ran through two managers trying to fix the mess of their own creation before they called requested Zidane to come back and steer their sinking ship once again. Unfortunately, his second spell has not been as rewarding as his first.
Their pre-season gave the fans more concerns to worry over. The many injuries to the team have not helped matters. Despite the decent display in the La Liga, they have been far from commanding for a team that costs as much as they do.
Put to test for the first time this season, they crumbled against PSG with a 3-0 loss in the Champions League. The team’s shameful performance saw them not register even a single shot on goal in the entire match.
Rumors have been running wild about Zidane’s stay at Madrid being in danger and the man touted to replace him is another ex-manager, Jose Mourinho and the Portuguese has finally opened up on his thoughts regarding the situation.
Jose Mourinho responds to rumors of replacing Zinedine Zidane
Mourinho has chosen to remain coy about the possibility of him taking over at the Bernabeu. Instead he has opted to remain classy about it and not pressure Zidane with the thought of him lurking and waiting in the corner.
“I would not like to return to Real Madrid because they have a coach, and he is not just anybody. My return to the bench will be when it will be,” he is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.
Mourinho had a rather successful stint at Real Madrid winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. However, his time came to an end after a rift with the senior players in the side back in 2013. If he does return, Mourinho shall hope that things will be different this time.
