Ruben Loftus Cheek will miss at least six months after picking up an Achilles injury.
Ruben Loftus Cheek picked up an injury when he was action against New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday. The English International has ruptured his Achilles tendon in the second half after coming on as a substitute and will miss at least six months of action, according to the English publication Standard.
More scans will take place on Thursday, but he is certain to miss the Europa League final later this month and UEFA Nations League in a month. The 23-year-old had to be carried off by two members of Chelsea’s medical team and was seen leaving the Gillette Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot on his left foot.
Manager Maurizio Sarri failed to give an update, but teammate Marcos Alonso’s implications towards Loftus Cheek’s injury does not sound good.
He said: “It doesn’t look very good to be honest. Fingers crossed, it will not be too much and that he can be running as soon as possible.
“I think it’s his achilles. I don’t know if he felt (it happened when) he was on his own. We are all very sad about this. It was very, very important not to get any injuries in this kind of game. Hopefully it won’t be too bad.”
The state of the ground looked really bad before the friendly was even kicked off. It is understood that Loftus Cheek had left the stadium in a separate car rather than with the rest of the squad in the team bus.
Ahead of the biggest game of the season, it will come as a huge blow for Maurizio Sarri. The Italian International will be without Callum Hudson Odoi and Ruben Loftus Cheek at Baku. It is such a shame as the English duo was slowly finding their feet having forced into Maurizio Sarri’s starting eleven.
