Dhoni has a different style of doing things says Sachin Tendulkar

MS Dhoni is widely regarded as the best Indian Captain of all time. Even worldwide, international cricketers regard him as one of the best Captains who ever played the game. Apart from that, Dhoni is respected not only as a cricketer but as well meaning human being.

Dhoni assumed the captaincy of the national team at a young age. His national captaincy assignment for the 2007 T20 World Cup was an instant success. Mahi gradually grew as a leader and first took the reins of the ODI side and closely followed that with the captaincy of the Indian Test side.

All this while, he had the privilege of captaining players like Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag and even the God of cricket Sachin Tendulkar. Not many know that it was actually Sachin who first suggested Dhoni’s name for captaincy. What followed is history!

Recently, in a chat show hosted by Gaurav Kapoor on his YouTube channel Breakfast with Champions, Sachin Tendulkar disclosed how he had tried to get inside the mind of Dhoni.

“Whenever I used to be fielding in the slips, I would be discussing with him, constantly, about the fielding positions. I would place my opinions and then he would place his and it was during these interactions that I picked that Dhoni has a different style of doing things.” Sachin noted.

As it turned out, Sachin was spot on with his prediction as Dhoni went on to become India’s greatest Captain on all time, leading India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Even now when Dhoni has stepped down from the captaincy, he remains a vital cog in India’s ODI set up. New Indian Skipper Virat Kohli often looks towards Dhoni in crunch situations for invaluable pieces of advice.

I, a failed cricketer say: write picturesque, write insightful; otherwise don’t write. My writings are a source of self pleasure. Enjoy a fiercely fought test session much more than a slam bang T20. I write anything, as per whim- news piece, feature, opinion, editorial, preview, analysis etc. Hope to write a book one day!
