The dust over Busquets’ contract has settled as the midfielder may sign the new contract later this week.

FC Barcelona enjoyed a highly successful domestic season in Spain. They completed the La Liga and Copa del Rey double this year. The Catalan giants lost only one game in the league, that too in the 37th match-week. Their European campaign may have halted in the quarterfinal stages, but Ernesto Valverde has little to complain.

The Barcelona manager attempts to maintain the balance in the squad in order to challenge for the European glory next season. Andres Iniesta has left for Vissel Kobe after over 20 years at the club, which has left a huge void to fill.

There are also reports of Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez leaving the club in near future, and so, FC Barcelona wouldn’t want any more setbacks in terms of player exits.

With the exit of Iniesta, Sergio Busquets has become a key figure in Barcelona’s midfield. The midfielder played in 35 La Liga games this season. With more than 300 appearances for Barcelona since signing his first pro-contract in 2008, Busquets is a regular figure in Barca’s defensive midfield.

Hence, it came as a huge relief for the Barca fans when Italy’s Calciomercato reported that the midfielder is set to sign a new contract with Barcelona.

The claim was doubled up by Spanish radio Mundo Deportivo. The current deal for Sergio Busquets expires in 2021.

According to Calciomercato, Busquets will be signing a new contract by the end of this week. The Spanish midfielder has been at the club since 2005, and has since won 7 La Liga titles. He has won 27 major honours with Barcelona.

With the absence of Iniesta, Busquets will play a vital part in Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona next season. Hence, the renewal of contract has come as a boost to Barcelona.
