Sergio Romero achieved another clean sheet in the game against Chelsea in the FA Cup, and became the best Man Utd goalkeeper – statistically.
Manchester United reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Chelsea. Maurizio Sarri’s side looked short of ideas as goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba ended their run in the competition.
Chelsea hardly troubled the Manchester United goalkeeper, Sergio Romero on the night. This was Romero’s third clean sheet this season in the six games he has played across all competitions.
The Argentinian is the first-choice goalkeeper for the national team but remains an understudy to the irrepressible David De Gea at Manchester United.
As he achieved the clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, he created a new record for the club.
That’s 27 clean sheets in 42 matches now for Sergio Romero at MUFC. He has a better clean sheet percentage (64.2%) than any other Utd goalkeeper who has played more than three matches for the club

Realise all these matches haven’t come against amazing opposition, but he’s played in some big games, like tonight’s match and the entire Europa League run, and he’s rarely let Utd down.

Sergio Romero now has the highest percentage of clean sheets among all the Manchester United goalkeepers in the club’s history. The stat takes into consideration the condition that a goalkeeper must have played at least four games for the side.
This was Romero’s 27th clean sheet in 43 appearances for Manchester United – a whopping clean sheet percentage of 64.2.
Here are the top five goalkeepers for Manchester United on the basis of their clean-sheet percentage:
- Sergio Romero (2015-present) – 64.2%
- Roy Carroll (2001-2005) – 52.7%
- Edwin van der Sar (2005-2011) – 50.7%
- Robert Brown* (1946-1949) – 50%
- Joseph Lancaster* (1950) – 50*
(* – both Robert Brown and Joseph Lancaster have played four games for Manchester United across all competitions.)
Sergio Romero was also the first-choice goalkeeper in Manchester United’s successful Europa League campaign in 2016/17.
Under Solskjaer, Romero has been the main man between the poles in the FA Cup. In the Premier League and the Champions League, David De Gea continues to be the first-choice goalkeeper for the side.

Sergio Romero is so good as a backup keeper that when he plays, we don’t even debate it. Can’t give him a bigger complement than that! #MUFC #ManUtd

What next?
Manchester United will return to action on the weekend as they await another heavyweight clash in the league. The side will host Liverpool, who are currently among the favourites for the Premier League title.
Solskjaer’s men would aim for a win to ensure they stay fourth in the league and prevent Liverpool from moving to the top of the table.
