Serena Williams on Friday was in the stands when Inter Miami took on Cruz Azul in the Major League Soccer’s League Cup match. The main reason why a pregnant Williams made such a plan was to watch soccer superstar Lionel Messi on his debut for Inter Miami.
And Lionel Messi certainly did not disappoint the home crowd and the lineup of celebrities alongside Williams. Messi scored a vintage, decisive free kick in the 94th minute that powered Inter Miami to a 2-1 win over their opponents. The match between the two MLS rivals was tantalisingly poised in the second half. Inter Miami took a 1-0 lead, but Cruz Azul managed to pull things back in the 65th minute. Lionel Messi was brought on as a substitute in the 54th minute, which led to massive cheers across the ground. Messi was roped in the Inter Miami side only last week, after exiting from Paris Saint Germain as a free agent. The 36-year-old still has all the power and agility to play competitive soccer and the free kick was a perfect example of the same, his move that has won him fans around the world.
Seeing that goal made Serena Williams nearly delirious, who was watching the match alongside reality show star Kim Kardashian. Soccer legend David Beckham, who is the co-owner of Inter Miami, also got a joyful hug from wife Victoria on that goal. Contrary to general perception, Serena Williams has a huge passion for soccer. In 2020, she was named one of the co-owners of the National Women’s Soccer League team, Angel City FC based out of Los Angeles. Williams also listed her daughter, Olympia as a co-owner amongst names which include Natalie Portman and Eva Longoria as well. Back then, the team was valued at approximately $100 million.
