The three clubs to remain in the ESL have refused to dissociate themselves with the competition

Ever since the European Super League made a foray into the footballing fraternity, the world of football was turned upside down. The bruhaha against the newly conceptualised competition was unprecedented with supporters of all the 12 clubs uniting to lament their sides.

The furore against the ESL lead to the immediate withdrawal of nine clubs. However, UEFA refused to be recompensed with the mere backing out of these sides as the governing council announced a raft of retrospective measures against the clubs on Friday.

However, despite the punishment meted out by UEFA, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are undeterred in their aspirations to push through with the Super League. The three clubs who remain in the ESL issued a statement ensuing UEFA’s sanctions.

ESL Clubs Issue Statement

And far from showing remorse for their actions, the three clubs decided to brazen it out. Adamant on going ahead with the Super League, the three sides have tried to justify their plans by citing financial exploitation.

“In relation to the statement released by UEFA on the 7th May in respect of the Super League and the position taken by 9 of its founding clubs, Fútbol Club Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid Club de Fútbol state the following:

“I- The founding clubs have suffered, and continue to suffer, unacceptable third-party pressures, threats, and offenses to abandon the project and therefore desist from their right and duty to provide solutions to the football ecosystem via concrete proposals and constructive dialogue. This is intolerable under the rule of law and Tribunals have already ruled in favour of the Super League proposal, ordering FIFA and UEFA to, either directly or through their affiliated bodies, refrain from taking any action which may hinder this initiative in any way while court proceedings are pending.

It remains to be seen what course UEFA adopts going forward in a bid to tackle Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Things are envisaged to turn sour with neither party looking likely to back down from its stance.
