Travis Kelce Joins Cleveland Guardians Ownership Group in Cross-Sport Move
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has joined the Cleveland Guardians ownership group as a minority investor.
The transaction connects the 11-time Pro Bowl selection to his hometown Major League Baseball franchise. Kelce, who grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, has previously noted that he frequently traveled downtown via the RTA during his childhood to attend games at Progressive Field.

“I have so much love for this city,” Kelce told ESPN. “I say it all the time: I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream. I credit every good thing in my life to Cleveland and being raised here with the values and the people and the work ethic.”
“Cleveland Heights is such a diverse and dynamic place. Every friend, neighbor, teacher and teammate — they all made me the man I am today. It just fueled such a deep appreciation for life and community and service. That mentality of Cleveland against the world runs deep.”
The Ownership Structure and What Kelce Is Buying Into
The Guardians’ ownership group is headed by chairman Paul Dolan and partner David Blitzer, who holds an option to purchase a majority stake following the 2027 season. Kelce slots in as a minority stakeholder; reports have suggested his share may be less than 1%, though that figure hasn’t been confirmed in official coverage from MLB or the NFL.
The Los Angeles Times reported the Guardians’ valuation has climbed from roughly $1 billion four years ago to $1.7 billion today.

This fits a broader trend of current athletes pursuing ownership stakes in teams they have genuine ties to, rather than purely transactional investments.
NFL players crossing into other sports has become a recognizable pattern, and Kelce’s move adds another high-profile name to that list while he’s still actively playing.
Kelce Almost Had Baseball Career
At 36, Kelce is at the stage of his career where off-field portfolio decisions carry real long-term weight. The Chiefs remain his football home, though the franchise has had its share of off-field distractions this offseason – including the ongoing situation surrounding Rashee Rice.
The Guardians are also dealing with their fair share of scandal with the ongoing criminal cases against pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase. Both players have been accused of deliberately throwing balls for betting purposes.
Kelce could have been accused of doing the same had money been riding on his attempted pitch at a match in April, 2023.

Kelce did say he had early interest from baseball scouts and could have ended up having a career on the diamond instead of the football field.
“I think I had always felt most confident on the diamond,” Kelce said. “I was playing every sport growing up, but baseball was actually the only one I had early interest from scouts, so I really did think it was a viable option for me. The football thing chose me at the end of the day, and when I moved to tight end, it really took off for me.”
Good Ownership Crucial to Success
Kelce said he wants to add to the culture of the team and stressed the importance of good ownership for a franchise’s success.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture,” Kelce stated. “Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I’m here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can.”
The size of Kelce’s stake hasn’t been fully disclosed, and neither he nor the Guardians have confirmed the exact terms of the investment.
In addition to the investment in the Guardians, Kelce holds a stake in the Alpine Formula 1 team along with Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes, a Royals fan, congratulated his teammate on securing a stake in his hometown team while posting a video of that pitch from 2023 on X.
“We’re both as competitive as it gets, so you know there will be some bragging rights on the line when we play our division games,” Kelce said.
