During the 40th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between Bangladesh and India at Edgbaston, India scored 314/9 in their allotted quota of 50 overs. What didn’t go down well with the fans was the fact that India looked set to score in vicinity of 350 runs given the kind of start they had.
The match was another instance when former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni found himself at the receiving end of blatant criticism. Coming in to bat at No. 6 in the 39th over, Dhoni scored 35 (33) with the help of four fours.

While Dhoni scored runs at an strike rate of 106.06, critics found bountiful faults in his approach as he once again waited for the last two overs to attack the opposition bowlers. What further didn’t work in his favour was him refusing a couple of singles in the last over.
While Indian fans expected Dhoni to make amends on the following delivery, he ended up skying a Mustafizur Rahman delivery to eventually walk back to the pavilion. Dhoni failing to up the ante towards the end was one of the reasons why India couldn’t bat Bangladesh out of the match in the first innings itself.
It is true that Dhoni’s approach has worked for both him and India in the past but the same has become a source of debate of late.
