Khamzat Chimaev Tests Positive For Covid-19; Fight With Leon Edwards in Jeopardy

Khamzat Chimaev tests positive for Covid-19, December 19 main event alongside Leon Edwards is probably off.

The year is about to close and yet Covid-19 spoiling the most awaited fights is still a fresh story. In lines with the same, this time it has victimized the much anticipated Leon Edwards Vs. Khamzat Chimaev fight.

According to reports, Khamzat Chimaev has tested positive for Covid-19 and thus the match-up that is suppose to close out the year in true sense and what many experts believe is the fight that is destined to happen in 2020 is on the brink of getting scrapped.

Khamzat Chimaev Tests Positive For Covid-19: What effect it may bring?

It may monetarily prove to be a huge setback for Leon Edwards, as after months of relentless seeking he zeroed down on Khamzat Chimaev, and the bout was a potential breakthrough for him to grab the ever eluding welterweight title shot.

Though he may now go up against a substitute of Khamzat, which could be anyone from his previous call outs as well i.e., Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, Gilbert Burns or even Nick Diaz for that matter. However, what’s unfortunate is, it was Leon, who first bore the brunt of the impact of lockdown as his fight against Tyron Woodley was the first cancelled main event (March) and now when he is all set to step inside the Octagon again after almost 17 months of inactivity, his opponent picks up the virus.

On the other hand, Chimaev has had a spectacular year in which not only he debuted in UFC but also modified history books with his record turnaround victories. He at the back of three consecutive wins in just 66 days made an entry in the Welterweight rankings as well. He might still get the “Fighter of the year” award. But as he might had put into words, a win over No.3 in the division had “Smashed” all the hype train speculations.

While there are still 20 days left for the fight to take place, but owing to at least two weeks of recuperation period, it is almost certain that Khamzat is out from the fight sheet, but still nothing concrete can be stated as of yet. But if he does get erased from the particular card then, who will replace him or whether this fight will get a new date, is the ultimate question. UFC would come out with an answer soon.
