Virat Kohli on training

Virat Kohli on training: The Indian captain reveals that his training schedule differs on match and non-match days.

There is no hiding to the fact that India captain Virat Kohli is not just one of the fittest cricketers around but is one of the fittest athletes around the world. Numerous anecdotes of the 30-year old cricketer’s journey to achieve this level of fitness have done the rounds in the past, all for the right reasons.

Kohli’s fitness regime isn’t just restricted to him doing it alone, as the captain of the team, Kohli has instilled this culture among all other Indian cricketers to the extent that the team, as a unit, is a much fitter side now.

In an interview uploaded on his official app, Kohli is seen speaking of how his training schedule varies on match and non-match days, saying that he doesn’t really do ‘hectic’ work on match days.

“On match days, I don’t really do hectic work. It’s all about doing a bit of activation, just some warm-ups and be able to get into the best possible position for the body to play that day. You can’t be too tired or too cold. That’s why we call it warm-up, just to warm the muscles enough to be able to be match-ready,” Kohli said.

Kohli further went on to say that the intensity surely increases on off-days where giving muscles a ‘hard time’ and then ‘recovering’ properly is given topmost priority. “When we have off-days, you can obviously be a bit more intense with your workout,” Kohli added.

“I really get the conditioning in the muscles which will be required, one or two days from then, which is the game day. That’s how the process works, you make the muscles go through a hard time and let them recover and be conditioned for that hard work on the field.”

He added that the intensity can never remain the same for an athlete like him and that it varies from time to time. He also laid emphasis on ‘analyzing’ with respect to what should be done when.

“It [intensity] varies from time to time. If I’ve played many games, even the off days are not hectic. If I’m playing the shorter formats like T20s or ODIs, then I have a bit more room to go and explore in my off days. I have to analyze what to do and when to do. But match days is definitely far more lighter than off day workout,” he concluded.

The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
