Virgil Van Dijk names Manchester City legend as the toughest opponent he has ever faced in his career compliments the striker’s capabilities.
Virgil Van Dijk is probably the best defender in the world at present, but he also had his days when he struggled to put up against few players and have often felt nervous facing them.
In an interaction with, with Jamie Redknapp on the Skysports, the Dutch defender revealed the best opponent he has faced in his career and it is not Lionel Messi but his compatriot Sergio Aguero.
“I’ve said it in an interview that I think that Aguero was the best striker I’ve played against, so maybe Aguero,” the Dutchman told Jamie Redknapp for Sky Sports when asked which footballer he would love to train with if stuck on a desert island.
In another world, Van Dijk might have moved to the Etihad instead of Anfield, as Manchester City were one of the many top clubs taking an interest in the towering defender before Liverpool broke records to sign him from Southampton.
Van Dijk explained that he was very near in joining the Pep Guardiola’s side. “Before I made the decision to choose Liverpool I looked at all the aspects of the clubs; the way of playing, the team-mates, the future as well,’ Van Dijk told BT Sport.
“The city, the fans, everything has got to be a big part of joining a club. I think Liverpool at that time when I made the decision was the right decision and obviously to reach the Champions League final in my first six months was obviously a big bonus and helped me a lot in my development.”
Van Dijk was surely the most crucial addition to Liverpool’s side and has played a pivotal role in their success. But had he joined Manchester City, it would have been interesting to see him pairing with Vincent Kompany and Aymeric Laporte.
