With Real Madrid already trailing Barcelona by nine points, Zidane and his men knew that they had to win at any cost against Girona to keep pace with the Catalan club. But it was not meant to be as the underdogs secured a memorable 2-1 victory over their more illustrious opponents.

Real had taken the lead initially through Isco, but then went behind to Girona after a couple of defensive errors. Recently crowned FIFA Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo had a particularly bad night as he just could not inspire his team mates to any great effect.

With hardly any shots on target, Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure as Real’s number seven looked quite fed up during several moments in the match. During one particular corner for Real, Ronaldo was seen holding a Girona player by the face and pushing him down to the ground.

The La Liga authorities can see this as an act of violent conduct which could lead to some serious repercussions for the Portuguese. Having already missed the initial few matches of La Liga, this would be another huge blow to Ronaldo and Real.

With things looking pretty dire in the league already, Real Madrid just cannot afford to lose Cristiano Ronaldo for any more matches.
