Two European heavyweights meet each other in the second day of FIFA World Cup, as Spain takes on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.

The 21st edition of the world cup marked off with a fiery start as host nation Russia defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0 to lead the Group A. The fixtures for Group B kick off today, and the fans are in for a treat as Spain meets Portugal.

Spain have gone through a disturbing last 48 hours, with their manager Julen Lopetegui removed a day before the world cup due to his failure in handling the Real Madrid situation efficiently. Fernando Hierro has replaced Lopetegui as the new manager for the world cup.

The Group B fixture between Spain and Portugal is touted as one of the biggest amongst the group stages this year. Both the teams are pinned to go far in the tournament.

The Match:

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal the perfect start as he converted the penalty after being fouled inside the box from Nacho. Spain dominated possession soon after.

However, Spain’s goal was the result of a counter-attack when Sergio Busquets retrieved the ball and sent it to Diego Costa. Spain were rewarded by a leveller in the 24th minute when Diego Costa received the long ball. Costa dribbled past a couple of defenders before finally drifting the ball in past Rui Patricio.

Here is the goal.
