Despite Being on Separate Brands, Beating Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Title Is Still “The Most Important Thing” to Cody Rhodes

Roman Reigns Cody Rhodes

Roman Reigns has been insurmountable since his heel turn in the summer of 2020. Several credible opponents have stepped up, but they have all been cast aside by the Tribal Chief. Cody Rhodes was the first challenger in almost three years that had fans convinced. However, he fell by the wayside like every other wrestler who dared step up to the head of the table. Any chance of a rematch between the two has since been squashed by them being drafted to separate brands. Although, this has done very little to deter the American Nightmare’s resolve of getting his win back.

Following the 2023 WWE Draft, Cody Rhodes is now a RAW exclusive talent. Roman Reigns, on the other hand, was the number one pick for SmackDown. It is unlikely that the two will have any contact going forward. However, Rhodes still has his sights set on Reigns.

Beating Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal title is still “the most important thing” to Cody Rhodes

During a conversation with “ComicBook Nation” Cody Rhodes opened up on his loss to Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39. Addressing the aftermath of the defeat, the American Nightmare stated that his goal was still the same, which was to dethrone Roman Reigns.

He said:

“The goal is the same for me. I came here wanting one thing. It doesn’t mean other stories won’t happen that will also be finished, and it doesn’t mean there aren’t other milestones. … But the most important thing to me is still the championship that sits on Roman’s shoulders.”

Rhodes added that he was currently focused on Brock Lesnar. The two will go head-to-head for the first time ever at Backlash. However, the long-term goal remains the pursuit of the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

As things stand, it is hard to conceive of a possibility where Rhodes gets another go at the Tribal Chief. But this is the WWE. Anything can happen, so long as they desire it to be.

Reigns vs Rhodes 2 at WrestleMania 40?

WrestleMania 39 may have just concluded. However, it appears that Triple H already has plans in place for WrestleMania 40. According to a report from WrestleVotes via GiveMeSport, the Cerebral Assassin is open to the idea of Cody Rhodes getting another shot at Roman Reigns.

The report reads:

“I can say this. The rematch that’s at the forefront of everybody’s minds, Cody vs Roman, is very much on the table to main event in Philadelphia next year.”

Cody Rhodes can always win the new World Heavyweight Championship. However, it is well known that the one title he really desires is the WWE Championship. It is after all the only title missing from his illustrious father’s legendary career.

The WWE title is in possession of Roman Reigns as one part of his Undisputed Championship. It is possible that the two are being kept separate from each other so that their next encounter means just as much, if not more, than their first one.

However, only time will tell what exactly is in Triple H’s mind.
