Johnny Gargano recaptures North American Championship at NXT TakeOver WarGames

Johnny Gargano recaptures North American Championship at NXT TakeOver: WarGames. He is now in his third reign with the title.

Johnny Gargano has come out on top against Leon Ruff and Damien Priest to become a three time North American Champion. He did have a little help to reclaim the title however, as multiple masked figures kept interfering in the match before one finally knocked Priest out with a shot to the head.

The man was later revealed to be Austin Theory who channelled his inner Vince McMahon as he screamed, it was me, it was me all along!

As far as the match is concerned, this match played out exactly as it was supposed to. Leon Ruff was the plucky underdog looking for his chance. Priest was the determined babyface taking on all comers while Gargano was the opportunistic heel who didn’t care how he won as long as he did.

Many will be displeased with the inclusion of several masked men in the match. However, their inclusion allowed Priest to look like an absolute star cleaning all of them. Ruff, the unlikely champion, despite his much smaller stature, looked like he belonged with his speed and athleticism. At times, it even felt like he would somehow defend his title.

Gargano may have won the title, everyone in the match however, seems to have come the better off it. Hopefully this isn’t the end of Ruff on Television. He has been very entertaining in the short he’s had. Priest as well, needs to maintain his momentum given how amazing 2020 has been to him.

Archie is a WWE and UFC Editor/Author at the SportsRush. Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
