Original backstage plans for Asuka at Clash of Champions revealed

Original backstage plans for Asuka at Clash of Champions revealed. Who was the Empress of tomorrow actually supposed to face?

Every WWE Title will be defended at Clash of Champions. It appears that the WWE RAW Women’s Champion Asuka will defend her title against an unlikely opponent in Zelina Vega. There are not many who can claim they saw that coming.

Vega has prominently been seen on WWE Television as a manager to Andrade and Angel Garza. However, with Garza and Andrade not on the best of terms at the moment, an irate Vega walked out on the bickering duo and chose to challenge the reigning empress of RAW instead.

Original backstage plans for Asuka at Clash of Champions revealed

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, Zelina Vega was not who the WWE originally wanted to face Asuka. That person would have been Shayna Baszler. Baszler had previously hinted at wanting to face Asuka when she told the champion she was on her side but after SummerSlam, she was coming for her. Plans however, have changed with Baszler winning the Tag Titles instead.

The other person being groomed for the title was Natalya. For some reason though, she has seemingly been dropped from the title picture as well.

“The original plan was Asuka vs. Shayna Baszler, but that got changed when Baszler won the tag titles,” Meltzer said. “It appeared they were headed for Asuka vs. Natalya, but it was never strongly pushed and more because they had started the Natalya & Lana pairing to build Natalya for a title shot. But that’s seemingly been dropped.”

Zelina recently revealed that Vince McMahon compared her to his daughter Stephanie McMahon and told her that she was one of the reasons why he watches RAW. It is up to Vega now to prove her mettle and vindicate her boss. It is unlikely that she will come out the victor at Clash of Champions, but a noteworthy performance will more than make a statement.

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
