WWE SmackDown May 28 2019: Hits and Misses from SmackDown Live

WWE SmackDown May 28 2019: Hits and Misses from SmackDown Live. Here’s a look at all the segments from tonight’s show that we either liked a lot or didn’t like at all.

Kofi Kingston Vs Kevin Owens (Hit)

First of all, huge props to WWE SmackDown May 28 2019 for starting a wrestling show with some wrestling. There was a bit of a back and forth on the mic but unlike yesterday, the two men quickly took the heat to the ring. As always, the two men delivered quite a match. Kofi winning was a foregone conclusion. Though at one point it looked like Kofi might just lose, as the WWE Champion struggled to beat the count out.

Kevin Owens amazingly kicked out of a Trouble in Paradise but a second one at the end of the match was too much for him. Kofi picked up another win on his way to WWE Super Showdown against Dolph Ziggler.

Not in this Fracking State! (Hit)

The SmackDown tag team champions came out for an in-ring interview with Kayla Braxton. Erick Rowan made a knock knock joke about the tag division that got a chuckle out of the audience. Daniel Bryan called the Tag Division at SmackDown a joke. He then berated the crowd just because.

Heavy Machinery then came out and challenged Bryan and Rowan to a match. Bryan agreed but refused to defend it in a Fracking State like Oklahoma.

Bryan was amazing in the segment and Rowan played his part well. Tucker was great on the Mic but Otis, the man was hilarious as always. The segment wasn’t all that great but everyone played their part well and the match, when it eventually happens, looks to be a promising affair.

Money Vs Magazine (Hit)

Carmella took on Mandy Rose in singles action. Mandy bragged about being on the cover page of a health magazine by showing of the said magazine. An annoyed Carmella kicked the Magazine off her hand. Later in the match, Mandy hit Carmella with a knee to the face. However, Carmella managed to kick out and launched a comeback. It didn’t last long though as Mandy Rose rolled up Carmella for the win following a distraction from Sonya Deville.

This was a decent match and better than anything that has involved women outside of the Title Picture. Hopefully it gets better from here because the only way these women will improve is by being given the spotlight.

R-Truth on the difficulties of being a Champion… (Hit)

R-Truth looked for shelter as the rest of the Roster hunted him for his 24/7 Championship. Jinder managed to ambush the Champion but Truth threw him behind a door and hid in the photo booth.

The others ran past the booth. With his path clear, Truth left the booth and crashed into Drake Maverick, who chased the champion all alone.

Truth has been brilliant with the belt and segments like these just show was a comedic genius he is. Maverick has been just as good with his desperate chase for the title. It’s like watching the Live action version of The Road Runner Show. Keep em comin!

Shane McMahon the Great! (Super Hit)

Shane McMahon the humble, Shane McMahon the great. The Best in the world, deservedly might I add, hosted an appreciation night for himself. He insisted that this was Drew McIntyre’s idea and bragged about his humbleness.

He then talked about Roman and how he planned to beat some respect into the Samoan. However, the Crown Prince of WWE was interrupted by R-Truth who had scrambled his way into the ring. Once Truth realised that he was only being chased by Maverick, he stopped and defeated the 205 live manager.

The interruption annoyed Shane as he ordered a brutal beatdown on Truth. Elias then pinned R-Truth to become the new 24/7 Champion. Shane then announced a match between his two henchmen and R-Truth and Roman as the nights main event. He suspended the 24/7 rules until the completion of the match so Elias could concentrate solely on the match.

This was brilliant. Many people are tired of seeing Shane on both Raw and SmackDown every week. However, working R-Truth in this segment was brilliant. No one wanted Truth to lose his title. Unfortunately, he did and, in the process, he revealed a very egomaniacal side of Shane. Yes, this is Shane’s new character and all with the best in the world thing. But after seeing Shane as a face for close to 4 years his heel turn didn’t feel very Shane like. This though, sealed it. His expressions when Truth interrupted him was top class and he genuinely looked like a man possessed by power and ego.

Vince’s Blondes Explode (Hit)

For some reason, Bayley’s first singles match after becoming SmackDown women’s champion was against a Raw competitor. Charlotte sat on commentary bragging about the number of titles she had won and how she could be a grand slam winner too if she wanted to.

Charlotte teased attacking Bayley after the champion fell out of the ring but opted not to. Bayley wasn’t as kind as she sucker punched Flair afterwards. Flair attempted to get some payback but instead ended up distracting the referee who failed to see Lacey roll Bayley up. Bayley reversed the roll up into one of her own to win the match.

Lacey Evans, in a fit of rage attacked Charlotte but the Queen quickly tamed the Lady by knocking her down.

The roll up win aside, this was a good T.V match. Quite entertaining and having Charlotte on commentary was a good decision. Having Charlotte and Lacey go at each other was surprising but the outburst actually fits their characters. It will be interesting to see what comes out of their brawl though. Unless the creative forgets about it next week.

Roman and Truth Vs Elias and McIntyre

R-Truth got ambushed before he could even step into the ring for his main event match. Roman dealt with both the heels alone. Truth then offered to tag in. The heels grew heavy on him, but Truth managed to get a hot tag to Roman. The Big Dog took on all heels. McIntyre missed a Claymore Kick and knocked himself out on the announcers table.

Elias tried to take advantage of the distraction but fell prey to Roman’s Spear. Roman pinned the Drifter for the win. With the match over, Roman speared Elias once again. He then directed Truth to pin Elias for the 24/7 Championship. Truth made the 3 count to become the first ever 2-time 24/7 champion.

This was a good match and an interesting way to add something new to a match we’ve seen multiple variations of since Wrestlemania. Truth getting the title back was a great way to close WWE SmackDown May 28 2019.

Conclusion

This was a great episode of SmackDown live. New storylines were created and old ones continued. There was a lot of wrestling, good wrestling on the show. Truth fulfilled the comedy quota. This is how you book a wrestling show. There’s plenty of room for improvement still but all in all, this was a very enjoyable program that left the viewers wanting more. Hopefully, the next episode of SmackDown delivers just the same, or even better.
