During Punjab’s sixth match of the ongoing season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Railways at Bengaluru, veteran Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh scored his 78th List A half-century, aiding Punjab to score a formidable total in the first innings.
Earlier, Mandeep Singh, captain of Punjab, had won the toss and chose to bat. Yuvraj Singh walked in to bat at No. 3 in the eighth over (1-48) when Chandrakant Sakure had dismissed Manan Vohra on 13.
The 36-year old southpaw took his time as Punjab lost two quick wickets in Shubman Gill (53) and captain Mandeep Singh (3). It was the duo of Yuvraj Singh and Gurkeerat Singh Mann which stitched a 144-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Yuvraj Singh might have failed to cross the three-figure mark but was successful enough to put Punjab in a strong position. He ended up scoring 96 (121) with the help of six fours and five sixes.
Before getting out on the penultimate delivery of the innings, Mann had caused further damage, scoring his third List A century, 101 (96), with the help of five fours and four sixes. On the back of two responsible innings from Yuvraj Singh and Mann, Punjab posted 284-6 in 50 overs.
Out of the five matches played so far, Punjab has won two and lost two matches. In a bid to qualify for the quarter-finals, Punjab needs to desperately win this match. Whether a 284-run total be enough for them, only time will tell.
Given his passionate fan-following, Yuvraj Singh instantly found a lot of support on social media platform Twitter, where his fans were overjoyed to see him back among the runs. Read some of the tweets below:
