5 records which Virat Kohli can break across formats in the near future

5 records which Virat Kohli can break across formats: The Indian captain is on the verge of further improving his numbers across formats.

Since the conclusion of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, India captain Virat Kohli has scored 1,739 runs in 36 matches at an average of 54.34 and a strike rate of 88.36 including four centuries and 10 half-centuries in all the three formats of the game.

Despite a Test average of 52.25, an ODI average of 58.10 and a T20I average of 53.10 since the last World Cup, Kohli was recently under the scanner for not scoring consistently. While most of the criticism was regarding Kohli’s performance in New Zealand, one also has to consider the expectations which people have from him every time he walks out to bat for India.

Kohli, who already has plentiful batting records to his name, is on the verge of achieving some more milestones especially when it comes to batting across formats. Perhaps it is Kohli’s knack of amassing runs across formats which makes him the arguably “most complete” contemporary batsman.

5 records which Virat Kohli can break across formats

Most runs across formats

In 416 matches across formats, Kohli has scored a whopping 21,901 runs at an average of 56.15. At the time of writing this article, the Indian skipper is the eighth-ranked among batsmen with most runs across formats.

There is no hiding to the fact that Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar tops this list with 34,357 runs at an average of 48.52 in 664 international matches.

While Kohli has a long way to go to surpass Tendulkar, he is in vicinity of the batsman above him in the list, i.e., former West Indies captain Brian Lara (22,358). Kohli only needs 458 runs to overdo the West Indian legend and reach the seventh position.

Most centuries across formats

It is worth mentioning that Kohli’s 416 international matches is the least among the aforementioned list. The same throws light on how quick Kohli has achieved all that that he has achieved at the highest level.

Having already crossed the 100-run mark on 70 occasions across formats, Kohli is only behind former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (71) and Tendulkar (100).

Therefore, Kohli requires only two more centuries across formats to reach at the second position. Kohli will once again require a lot of time before surpassing Tendulkar in this category.

Most away runs across formats

The Indian captain is also on the brink of becoming only the fourth batsman ever to score 10,000 international runs away from home. In 184 international outings, Kohli has scored 9,625 runs at an average of 50.65 including 34 centuries and 42 half-centuries.

While Kohli will yet again need a lot of time to pin down Tendulkar (13,780) from the top in this list, he only needs 205 runs to surpass legendary South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis (9,625). By doing so, Kohli will reach the fifth position in this list.

Other than the names mentioned above, Ponting (10,632), Sangakkara (10,780) and former India captain Rahul Dravid (11,765) are the other names who mark their presence in this category.

Most home runs across formats

The list of scoring most runs across formats at home sees the current Indian captain at the seventh position. In 166 international matches at home, Kohli has amassed 9,543 runs at an average of 62.37.

While Kohli requires 269 runs at home to surpass former Australia captain Allan Border’s tally of 9,811 runs in 263 matches, him scoring 457 runs will see him become the sixth batsman to score 10,000 international runs at home.

Having registered 32 international centuries at home, Kohli is only behind Ponting (36) and Tendulkar (42) in the list of most centuries at home.

Most runs in Asia

Having scored 12,627 runs in 230 matches at an average of 61.59 including 43 centuries and 57 half-centuries, Kohli is currently the sixth-ranked batsman in the list of most number of runs scored in Asia. Kohli needs another 871 runs to overdo Dravid (13,497) in the category.

Kohli, 31, is an early entrant in the category of batsmen who have scored the maximum amount of runs after turning 30. Having scored 3,236 runs in 65 matches across formats at an average of 53.93 including eight centuries and 19 half-centuries, Kohli is 113th on the list of batsmen with most runs after the age of 30.

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara tops this list with 16,369 runs in 311 matches across formats which had come at an average of 50.83. Having scored 43 centuries and 90 half-centuries in this period, the southpaw also has the most 50+ scores after the age of 30.
