5 records which Virat Kohli can break during West Indies ODIs

5 records which Virat Kohli can break: The Sportsrush present before you a list of record which the Indian captain can break during WI ODIs.

During the second ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of West Indies at Port of Spain, India captain Virat Kohli will take the field with a sight on several milestones to be achieved as far as his own batting is concerned.

Having scored 11,286 runs in 237 ODIs at an average of 59.40 and a strike rate of 93 including 41 centuries and 54 half-centuries, Kohli now stands a chance of going past some absolute greats of the game.

The 30-year old right-hand batsman is in such a phase of his career where records will remain in vicinity irrespective of where and which format he plays.

With the first ODI at the Province Stadium in Guyana getting washed out due to rain, India need to win the remaining two ODIs to win the match. In such a situation, runs coming out of Kohli’s bat will serve the dual purpose for both the team and him as well.

5 records which Virat Kohli can break

1) Most runs in ODIs

Kohli is currently at the ninth spot when it comes to most runs scored in ODIs. Even a mediocre two ODIs will see him jumping a spot to reach No. 8. However, a blockbuster series will aid Kohli in jumping two spots to reach No. 7.

Kohli is currently only 78 runs behind surpassing former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who had scored 11,363 runs in 311 matches at an average of 41.02 and a strike rate of 73.70 including 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries. One of the top batsmen of his times, Ganguly might be seen dropping down by a position to No. 9 next week.

The other batsman in Kohli’s reach is former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis. In what seems to be a daunting task, Kohli needs 294 runs to overdo Kallis. The legendary batsman had scored 11,579 runs in 328 ODIs at an average of 44.36 and a strike rate of 72.89 including 17 centuries and 86 half-centuries.

2) Most runs against West Indies

In 34 ODIs against West Indies, Kohli has scored 1,912 runs at an average of 70.81 and a strike rate of 96.27 including seven centuries and 10 half-centuries. The Indian skipper is currently at the second position when it comes to scoring most runs against West Indies in ODIs.

The top spot is held by former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad. In 64 ODIs against West Indies, Miandad had scored 1,930 runs at an average of 33.85 and a strike rate of 63.78 including a century and 12 half-centuries.

Kohli will be able to go past Miandad if he scored 31 runs in the next two ODIs. The fact that Kohli has played just over half the matches Miandad had played against West Indies speaks highly about the pace with which the Indian captain has scored runs against the given opposition.

Among the current players after Kohli is India vice-captain Rohit Sharma. In 28 ODIs against West Indies, Sharma has scored 1,237 runs at an average of 61.85 and a strike rate of 90.55 including two centuries and 10 half-centuries.

3) Most half-centuries against West Indies

As mentioned in the last slide, Kohli has scored 10 ODI half-centuries against West Indies. Kohli is currently at the joint-fourth position when it comes to scoring most ODI half-centuries against West Indies.

The remaining two ODIs will give Kohli a chance of better his position by at least two positions. Kohli shares the position with his deputy in Sharma, who has also scored 10 half-centuries against West Indies.

Among other batsmen who have scored more half-centuries against West Indies are former Australia opening batsman Mark Waugh (11), Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar (11), former India captain Sourav Ganguly (11), former Pakistan opening batsman Javed Miandad (12), former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis (12), former Australian captain Ricky Ponting (12) and former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq (13).

It is worth mentioning that as far as the most 50+ scores against West Indies are concerned, Kohli grabs the top spot with 17 such scores. The next on the list is Kallis (16).

4) Most runs against and in West Indies by a visiting batsman

In 13 ODIs against and in West Indies, Kohli has scored 556 runs at an average of 55.60 and a strike rate of 90.40 including two centuries and three half-centuries. Currently at the fourth position in this list, Kohli is only five and 29 runs away from former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and veteran Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez respectively.

In 13 ODIs against West Indies in their own backyard, Inzaman had scored 560 runs at an average of 56 and a strike rate of 64.73 including seven half-centuries. On the other hand, Hafeez has scored 584 runs in 14 ODIs at an average of 41.71 and a strike rate of 79.24 including a century and five half-centuries.

Having scored 784 runs in 17 ODIs at an average of 52.26 and a strike rate of 76.56 including a century and eight half-centuries, former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis tops this list.

Among the current players in this list after Kohli is England batsman Joe Root, who has scored 506 runs in 11 ODIs at an average of 56.22 and a strike rate of 84.05 including three centuries and a half-century.

5) Most centuries in West Indies by a visiting batsman

As far as scoring most centuries in West Indies as a visiting batsman is concerned, Kohli shares the joint-second position after having scored a couple of centuries in the island nation.

Among other players who have scored two centuries in West Indies are former cricketers such as Jacques Kallis, Mahela Jayawardene, AB de Villiers, Stephen Fleming, Herschelle Gibbs, Sanath Jayasuriya, Kevin Pietersen and Darren Lehmann and current cricketers in Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal England captain Eoin Morgan.

This list is topped by former Australia opening batsman Matthew Hayden, former South Africa opening batsman Hashim Amla and England batsman Joe Root, all of whom have scored three centuries in West Indies.
