7 Records which MS Dhoni can break against WI

7 Records which MS Dhoni can break against WI: Sportsrush presents before you some records which Dhoni can achieve in the ODI series.

Former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni will take the field on October 21 against Windies at Guwahati with a sight on numerous ODI feats up for grabs. Such feats are bound to come ahead of every series for anyone who has a line of work as vast as that of Dhoni.

In the 327 ODIs that he has played so far, Dhoni has scored 10,123 runs at an average of 50.61 and a strike rate of 87.85.

Albeit in the midst of an extended lean patch, Dhoni would be looking break the shackles in the five-match ODI series in a bid to gain momemtum for the tour of Australia next month and silence his critics.

Below are the records which Dhoni can break:

1) 11th Highest run-scorer in ODIs – As mentioned above, Dhoni has 10,123 ODI runs to his name. He is currently at the 12th spot on the list of highest run-scorers in the format. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has 10,290 runs under his belt, is a position above Dhoni. Dhoni will need 168 runs in five matches to surpass Dilshan.

2) Fourth batsman to score 10,000 runs for India – Out of his 327 ODIs, Dhoni has played three for Asia XI. Batting for India, Dhoni has scored 9,949 runs in 324 matches at an average of 50.24. Dhoni needs 51 more runs to become the third batsman (after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid) to score 10,000 ODI runs for India.

3) Most runs by an Indian batsmen against Windies – In 33 ODIs against Windies, Dhoni has scored 899 runs at an average of 59.93 and a strike rate of 90.26. Currently at No. 7 in this list, Dhoni has a chance to enter the Top Four of this list.

If Dhoni scores 244 runs in five matches, he will surpass former captain Sourav Ganguly, who has scored 1,142 runs in 27 matches at an average of 47.58 and a strike rate of 72.18 against the same opposition. With 1,573 runs in 39 matches at an average of 52.43 and a strike rate of 78.02, Sachin Tendulkar holds the top spot in this list.

4) Most ODI dismissals by a wicket-keeper – In 327 ODIs, Dhoni has affected 419 (306 catches and 113 stumpings) dismissals behind the wickets. Currently at No. 4, Dhoni needs only six more dismissals to surpass former South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher (424).

With 482 dismissals (383 catches and 99 stumpings) in 404 ODIs, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara tops this list.

5) Most ODI dismissals by a wicket-keeper against Windies – In 33 ODIs against Windies, Dhoni has affected 40 (28 catches and 12 stumpings) dismissals behind the stumps. Currently at No. 3, Dhoni needs only seven more dismissals to again surpass Bouncher (46).

If the 37-year old Indian wicket-keeper manages to affect 10 dismissals in five matches, he will reach the top of this list by surpassing former Australia wicket-keeper Ian Healy (49).

6) Most ‘Man of the Series’ awards for an Indian cricketer – In the 75 ODI tournaments (bilateral series and multi-team tournaments) which Dhoni has played, he has won the ‘Man of the Series’ awards six times. Among the Indian cricketers, Dhoni is the joint-third (alongside India captain Virat Kohli) at the moment.

Dhoni last won the award when England had toured India in 2011. If Dhoni manages to break this seven-year halt, he will join Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh as the joint-second for Indian cricketers winning the ‘Man of the Series’ award.

Interestingly, among cricketers who have won six or more such awards, Dhoni is the only wicket-keeper (minimum 100 ODIs as designated wicket-keeper) to feature on the list.

An unwanted record might also come Dhoni’s way

7) 2018 can become Dhoni’s worst year in ODIs – In 15 ODIs this year, Dhoni has scored 225 runs at an average of 28.12 and a strike rate of 67.36. The series against Windies being India’s last ODI assignment of the year, 2018 has it in it to leave behind woeful memories for Dhoni.

To not let this year become his worst in terms of number of ODI runs, Dhoni will have to score at least 53 runs in this series. Talking of calendar years, since his debut in December 2004 (2004 not counted), Dhoni scored the least number of runs in 2016 (278). Apparently, he had played only 13 ODIs that year as compared to 15 (with five remaining) this year.

At this point in time, 2016 and 2018 remain the only two years where Dhoni has scored less than 400 runs in a calendar year.

In terms of strike rate, 2018 (67.36) is already Dhoni’s worst year. Barring 2010, where Dhoni scored runs at a strike rate of 78.94, his strike rate has never dropped below 80 in his 14-year international cricket.
