Christian McCaffrey Returns as 49ers Trade RB Deion Jones For Veteran Linebacker Depth

Christian McCaffrey is back on the field for the San Francisco 49ers, and the team is framing his two-week absence as a plan rather than a problem. At the same time, San Francisco made a roster move on defense, acquiring linebacker Deion Jones from the New Orleans Saints in a swap that sent running back Zamir White the other way.

Together, the two developments show a team actively shaping its roster in the final stretch before the regular season.

McCaffrey’s Load Management Plan

McCaffrey returned to practice Sunday after missing 15 days with what the team had labeled tightness.

Speaking after the session, McCaffrey said the absence was part of a plan built from the start of camp.

“This was kind of part of the plan from the jump,” McCaffrey told 49erswebzone.com. “Was to ramp up pretty big, get 9, 10 practices in, kind of come back down, and then ramp back up so we’re fresh for the duration.”

McCaffrey added that he’s used a modified practice schedule since 2019, citing former Panthers coordinator Norv Turner, who sent him to find shade during camp sessions.

He took part in a handful of 11-on-11 snaps Sunday, including a carry that broke for roughly 25 yards.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had already shot down any contract-related theories on Aug. 18, saying McCaffrey would have practiced that day under a normal game-week schedule rather than during a joint session with the Chargers.

The 30-year-old running back logged 311 carries and 102 catches during the 2025 season, a workload that makes deliberate rest more understandable than alarming.

McCaffrey Return Sees White Join New Orleans

The return of McCaffrey sees running back Zamir White traded to New Orleans before he had the chance to feature for the 49ers. San Francisco signed White on a one-year deal earlier this month, but the need for a running back is greater in New Orleans.

The Saints are dealing with injuries to Alvin Kamara, Audric Estime, and Devin Neal in their backfield, a situation already generating debate around New Orleans’ running back room.

For San Francisco, White had faced long odds to make the roster once McCaffrey, Kaelon Black, and Jordan James all returned from injury within days of each other.

Jones, 31, also leaves New Orleans after only joining the team this month. He appeared in all 17 games for Tampa Bay last season in his second year in Florida.

Previously, the linebacker started 83 games for Atlanta over six seasons, made the Pro Bowl in 2017, and has a prior connection with 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris from their time together with the Falcons.

He joins a linebacker group that recently lost depth after Jalen Graham missed practice time with an injury.

What This Means for San Francisco

McCaffrey’s return coincides with tight end George Kittle also working back into practice, and Kittle’s own preseason workload has followed a similarly careful build-up after his Achilles injury. The Jones trade, meanwhile, adds low-cost veteran depth at a position that had thinned out unexpectedly.

The next checkpoint is San Francisco’s preseason finale against the Raiders on Aug. 27, followed by roster cuts and the season opener against the Rams in Melbourne on Sept. 10.

How much McCaffrey plays in that final tune-up, and whether Jones earns a defined defensive role, will say more about the 49ers’ true plans than either move does on its own.
