Ben Stokes reveals his chat with Kane Williamson regarding overthrow controversy in 2019 World Cup final
Stokes reveals his chat with Kane Williamson: The English all-rounder was vocal about the overthrow controversy at Lord’s.
England all-rounder Ben Stokes has achieved the rare honour of winning the ‘Man of the Match‘ award in the final of a World Cup. Scoring his 21st ODI half-century, Stokes was the fulcrum of English batting especially when the top-order batsmen failed to provide a fantastic start.
Speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Stokes admitted that there wouldn’t be another game like this in the history of cricket. After the match ended in a tie, the match registered the rare occasion of the super over also ending in a tie.
“I’m pretty lost for words. All the hard words that’s gone in over these four years, this is where we aspired to be. To do it with such a game, I don’t think there will be another like this in the history of cricket,” Stokes was quoted as saying.

It was a 110-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Stokes and England wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler which brought back England into the match from 86/4. While Buttler opened up the game for his team, it was Stokes’ unbeaten 84* (98) with the help of five fours and a couple of sixes which aided England in scoring 241 in 50 overs.
Next rule change that HAS to happen in cricket: Overthrows ricocheting off the batsmen cannot be runs. Can’t penalise the fielding team for that. After today, don’t think anyone can disagree. #CWC19

In what will go down as an unfortunate incident for New Zealand was Stokes getting four overthrows in the last over of the match after the ball deflected off his bat. Being asked about the same, Stokes revealed apologizing to Williamson after the incident.
“Jos [Buttler] and I knew if we’d be there close to the end, New Zealand would be under pressure. [On the overthrow controversy] Not the way I wanted to do it, ball going off my bat like that, I apologized to Kane [Williamson],” Stokes added.
