Isuru Udana favours spirit of cricket: Paarl Rocks’ all-rounder gained plentiful praises for not running out the opposition batsman.

During the 28th match of the ongoing second season of the Mzansi Super League between Paarl Rocks and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in Paarl, Paarl Rocks all-rounder Isuru Udana refusing to not run-out Nelson Mandela Bay Giants batsman has gained him significant points on the lines of “spirit of cricket”.

It all happened on the penultimate delivery of the penultimate over when Bay Giants batsman Heino Kuhn hit an Udana delivery down the ground. With the ball hitting non-striker Marco Marais, it lobbed off back to the bowler.

With Marais struggling to get back to the crease, Udana didn’t run-out the batsman predominantly because of him getting hit by Kuhn.

Chasing a 169-run target, Bay Giants were restricted to 156/6 in 20 overs. Coming in to bat at No. 4 in the eighth over, Kuhn top-scored for his team with 58 (43) with the help of four fours and a six but his 13th T20 half-century wasn’t enough for the visitors.

It was Bay Giants captain JJ Smuts who won the toss and put the hosts in to bat who scored 168/5 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Cameron Delport, who opened the batting with Henry Davids (31), top-scored for Rocks with 39 (22) with the help of nine fours.

With bowling figures of 4-0-14-2, Bay Giants spinner Imran Tahir was the pick of their bowlers. Having picked 16 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 13.50, an economy rate of 5.68 and a strike rate of 14.2, Tahir has also become the highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far.
