On May 25, four officers from the Minneapolis Police Department approached George Floyd in his car while responding to an alleged forgery in progress. The officers removed Floyd from the vehicle and placed him face down on the ground.
In a video of their encounter, which has gone viral since, officer Derek Chauvin can be seen kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd repeatedly saying that he was struggling to breathe.
He eventually died at a local hospital and Chauvin has since been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The three other officers have not been charged but remain under investigation.
