Mercedes F1 DAS system: Christian Horner questions legality of Mercedes’ revolutionary system
The Mercedes F1 DAS system has come under the scanner during the ongoing Austrian GP weekend, with Horner seeking clarification over its legality.
The F1 2020 season has just only begun, and teams are jostling to out muscle each other ahead of the Austria Grand Prix raceday on Sunday.
Technological and technical innovation is playing a clear role in it, with Mercedes adopting the controversial DAS(Dual-Axis Steering) system. It has come under the scanner again after being used in the Free Practice 1 in Austria earlier today.

What does the Mercedes F1 DAS System do?
The Dual-Axis Steering system, or DAS, allows the Mercedes drivers to adjust the toe of their front wheels.
In simpler terms, it allows them to make their steering wheels front or backwards too, apart from the regular sideways motion. This is being considered to be revolutionary and helps in better control of the F1 cars.
Christian Horner not pleased with the DAS system
Red Bull Racing have decided not to implement DAS this season, but recognize its benefits. Their Team Principal Christian Horner is alarmed by its use by Mercedes though. He has hinted they have lodged an inquiry request to FIA.
“Everything has to earn its place on the car,” Horner said. “It’s a clever system, it’s an ingenious system. But these rules are so complex it’s just understanding which part of the regulations it fits.”
Their other prime rival Ferrari have also decided against using DAS, as they were apprehensive of its legality according to F1 regulations. But Horner was coy when asked if Red Bull would consider using it on their steering wheels. “It depends what it actually does and achieves.”

The DAS remains banned from the 2021, but if teams like Red Bull and Ferrari show interest, things could change.
Meanwhile, Mercedes did the inevitable finishing 1-2 in Free Practice One at the Red Bull Ring. The second session starts at 6:30 PM IST.
