Suresh Raina retirement news: The left-hand batsman announcement his retirement minutes after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s announcement.

Suresh Raina has followed the footsteps of Mahendra Singh Dhoni to announce his retirement from international cricket. Much like his Chennai Super Kings captain, Raina also took to his social media platform Instagram handle to call time on his career.

Despite Raina and Dhoni getting along exceedingly well off the field, not many players would have retired in this manner especially anyone who has played 300+ matches across formats at the highest level. Raina’s retirement also sort of highlights his career where him playing second fiddle to others won matches for India.

Raina, who last played for India during the tour of England in 2018, had last played competitive cricket more than a year ago in IPL 2019. Having made his international debut in 2005, Raina scored 7,988 runs in 322 matches including seven centuries and 62 half-centuries across formats.

Raina, 33, will always be remembered as the first Indian batsman to score centuries in all the three formats of the game. However, it was his bountiful contributions in winning matches for India which made him an impact player in the Indian middle-order.

Known for playing his shots from the word go, Raina played crucial innings in India’s victorious campaign in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. While India lost the semi-final in 2015 Cricket World Cup, Raina had registered a couple of half-centuries and an unbeaten match-winning century in Australia and New Zealand as well.

A handy option with the ball in hand and an extra ordinary contributor in the field, Raina was another of those players who contributed significantly across divisions on a cricket field. Raina also had the opportunity of leading India in 15 white-ball matches from 2010-2014.

In the recent past, Raina had called for permitting non-contracted players to play in overseas T20 leagues. With him retiring from international cricket now, his fans might get to see him playing in various T20 leagues around the world.
