Timelord NBA: How Robert Williams got the nickname ‘Time Lord’ and a chance at a ‘watch’ sponsorship

Robert Williams has been on a tear in the NBA bubble. This has led to many people googling his nickname ‘Time Lord’. What are the origins of this curious moniker?

A 2nd year player out of Texas A&M, Williams was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 27th pick in the 2018 NBA draft. At a height of 6’8″, Williams is an undersized big man. But he has the hops to be an efficient role player. Williams was the top scorer of the first quarter of Game 2 between the Celtics and Raptors today, scoring 10 points. So far in this series, Williams is yet to miss a shot.

Robert Williams ‘Time Lord’ nickname origin

During his rookie season, Robert Williams missed his first team meetings over conference call, because he’d overslept. He then followed it up shortly after by missing a team flight, meaning that he’d miss practice. The Boston Celtics subreddit picked up on both events and christened him ‘Time Lord’ for his apparent inability to make it on time anywhere.

The nickname did not first have much traction. However, with his first few appearances in the bag for the franchise, Williams raised eyebrows with his high vertical leap in a game against the Atlanta Hawks. His conversion of an inviting alley-oop thrown up by Kyrie Irving after the latter crossed up 2 players was one of the highlights of the Celtics’ season.

In a recent interview, Robert Williams also revealed that ‘Tissot’ reached out to him and they are currently working out a sponsorship deal with the young Celtics star.

“They’ve reached out, they’ve reached out,” he said.

“It may or may not work, but they have reached out” he added.

Williams has had a prominent role to play for the Celtics in the bubble. He was incandescent from the field in the seeding game against the Raptors as well, not missing a single shot through the game while going 5-of-5.
