FIA to investigate Lewis Hamilton for wearing Breonna Taylor T-shirt at Mugello
FIA to investigate Lewis Hamilton wearing a Breonna Taylor t-shirt carrying political message at Mugello ahead of the Tuscan Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton has lately been highly active politically amidst the Black lives matter movement. On Sunday, the 6-time world champion wore a t-shirt which wrote: “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor”.
Also after standing up to the podium, Hamilton even said “Justice for Breonna Taylor” after ending up with his interview at Tuscan Grand Prix.
Hamilton first wore the T-shirt ahead of the race when he again took a knee, as F1 drivers gathered in their anti-racism ceremony. Speaking in subsequent interviews, Hamilton assertively spoke against the issue.
“It took me a long time to get that shirt and I’ve been wanting to wear that and bring awareness to the fact that there are people that have been killed on the street and there’s someone that got killed in her own house, and they’re in the wrong house, and those guys are still walking free.
“We can’t rest, we can’t… we have to continue to raise awareness with it.” Hamilton was the latest sportsperson to highlight Taylor’s fate. Tennis player Naomi Osaka, meanwhile, wore a face mask with Taylor’s name on before her first-round match at the US Open.
FIA to look into the matter
According to the report by the Skysports, FIA has reportedly took cognizance of the act by Hamilton and are currently conducting the investigation.
Though, the governing body has not made any statement in favour or against it. So far, Formula 1 has passively supported the anti-racism movement by giving the drivers a stage to show their solidarity to the movement before the races.
However, the authoritative body hasn’t applied any strong opposition to the ongoing issue unlike the NBA and the Premier League and that is why Hamilton believes that F1 is not doing enough.
