‘Anthony Edwards doesn’t Like Basketball, want to be a rapper’: NBA draft prospect Anthony Edwards shocks teams

In an interview with ESPN, top 2020 NBA Draft prospect Anthony Edwards revealed that he doesn’t really watch the game at all.

Long considered one of the top 3 talents on this year’s draft board, Georgia one-and-done prospect Edwards is a colorful guy. The 19-year-old guard is one of the most NBA-ready players available. Many consider him to be the lone player capable of holding down a spot in the NBA beyond his second contract.

Standing at 6’4″, the shooting guard had an up-and-down season with the Georgia Bulldogs. While his raw stats are decent, the guard barely cracked the 40% field goal percent mark and was also only 29.4% from downtown. It remains to be seen what his ceiling is, but he clearly did not have a runaway college season.

What makes Anthony Edwards a dicey draft prospect?

The NBA is unforgiving in terms of players who don’t have a constant drive to improve. In his interview with ESPN’s Alex Scarborough, Edwards did not inspire much confidence.

“To be honest, I can’t watch basketball. I’m still not really into it. I love basketball, yeah. It’s what I do.”

He’s not entirely convincing. He says if he were drafted by the NFL tomorrow, he’d let basketball go. “Because you can do anything on the field,” he explains. “You can spike the ball. You can dance. You can do all type of disrespectful stuff.” In the NBA, he says, “you can’t do any of that. You’ll get fined.”

He also explained that he wants to pursue an alternate career as a rapper, besides being a basketball player. He’s already recorded a few tracks with his older brother Bubba.

“But I really can rap,” he says. “Dame, talking about — I don’t know what he’s talking about. I’m rapping like Lil Baby.”

Edwards says he won’t release his music till the time he’s established in the NBA. Given his comments about his detachment from the game, that is not a surefire thing.
