Shikhar Dhawan dons retro 1992 World Cup jersey: The Indian opening batsman was seen wearing the new jersey in his latest tweet.

Much like Australia did against India during India’s previous tour of Australia in 2018-19, India will now wear retro jerseys during the imminent tour of Australia.

While the same was being speculated for some days now, India opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan posting a photo of him wearing the retro jersey across social media platforms has confirmed the development.

With the jersey being navy blue in colour, it closely resembles the one which Indian players had worn during the 1992 Cricket World Cup which was played in Australia and New Zealand.

“New jersey, renewed motivation. Ready to go,” read Dhawan’s post across social media platforms.

It is worth mentioning that both Australia and New Zealand had even planned to wear a retro jersey against New Zealand in March this year. However, the COVID-19 outbreak had restricted the three-match ODI series to a lone match played in Sydney.

Coming on the back of 618 runs in 17 matches at an average and strike rate of 44.14 and 144.73 respectively which included two centuries and four half-centuries, Dhawan was the second-highest run-scorer in the recently concluded 13th season of the Indian Premier League.

With India limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma not part of the 15-member ODI squad due to a hamstring tear, the onus will be more on Dhawan during the three-match ODI series.

At the top of the order, the 34-year old player will be banking on his record against Australia which has seen him scoring 1,145 runs in 27 ODIs at an average and strike rate of 45.80 and 98.79 respectively. In 18 ODIs in Australia, Dhawan’s 699 runs have been inclusive of two centuries and three half-centuries.
