Australia Cricket Black Armbands: Why are Australian cricketers wearing black armbands today in Sydney ODI vs India?
Australia Cricket Black Armbands: The Australian cricketers are wearing black armbands in the ongoing first ODI at the SCG.
During the first ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of Australia in Sydney, Australian captain Aaron Finch has won the toss and chose to bat as himself and David Warner have come out to open the batting against the likes of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.
In what is a cautious start by the two senior Australian batsmen, they would be looking to stage a solid opening partnership for the recent history at the Sydney Cricket Ground has mostly witnessed high-scoring matches.
Moreover, given the prowess of the current Indian batting line-up, Australia wouldn’t want to settle for a regular ODI score.

Australia Cricket Black Armbands
The Australian players have caught the attention of the fans in this match for wearing black armbands. It is worth mentioning that the same has been done as a tribute for former Australia batsman Dean Jones who had passed away due to a cardiac arrest while being part of the commentary panel for Star Sports in the recently concluded 13th season of the Indian Premier League.
Jones, 59, who made his international debut in 1984, ended up playing 52 Tests and 164 ODIs before playing his last international match in 1994.
Other than paying a tribute to Jones, Australian cricketers also paid a tribute to late Australia batsman Phillip Hughes as today marks the sixth anniversary of his demise.
“Today, as they take the field at the SCG, Australia’s limited overs squad will walk past Phillip Hughes’ plaque, which stands in perpetuity atop the players’ race. Our thoughts are also very much with today’s players and all who played with or against Phillip,” Interim CEO of Cricket Australia Nick Hockley had said in a statement before the start of the match.
