“He’s the best driver in the best car at the moment” – Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff confirms his views on the Lewis Hamilton vs George Russell debate

“He’s the best driver in the best car at the moment” – Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has revealed who he believes is the best between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

George Russell has had a brilliant debut for Mercedes, albeit extremely unfortunate. He had the opportunity to win the race on two occasions, only for the pit crew and W11 to let him down, uncharacteristically. Nevertheless, he finished 9th and got the bonus for the fastest lap in the race. But his current boss Toto Wolff is not getting carried away and believes Lewis Hamilton is still the best on the grid.

“I think Lewis Hamilton wins so much, and many titles, because he’s the best driver in the best car at the moment.”

“And we are very humble about it, because it’s not a given that we provide him with the best car. And that’s why we have a positive influence when the car works well to be part of his success, and we have a negative influence when our car doesn’t work.”

Combination of driver and car makes the difference – Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff further added that is the combination of the driver and car which makes the ultimate difference. As it stands, Lewis Hamilton is the best out there, and W11 is the fastest car in F1 ever. Wolff called Russell a “new kid” with a bright future in F1, who shouldn’t be compared to a living legend like his compatriot.

“So it’s never a driver that makes all the difference and it’s never the car that makes all the difference, it’s the combination of the two. Lewis is still the benchmark, he’s the best driver out there.”

“He has proven that with his multiple records. And we mustn’t be carried away at this stage by a phenomenal drive from a new kid who has a bright future in F1. Lewis is still the benchmark.”
