“I think he can push Max more than Albon”- Christian Horner on Sergio Perez
“I think he can push Max more than Albon”- Christian Horner on Sergio Perez’s contention in Red Bull car against Max Verstappen.
Red Bull after the end of the season signed Sergio Perez as they remained dissatisfied with Alex Albon’s recent performances, while the Mexican race driver amassed impressive performances.
Christian Horner has now further rationalised his decision to hire Perez, as he believes that Perez will be able to give a better challenge to Max Verstappen than Albon did.
“Checo has a lot of experience and has been driving Formula 1 for ten years,” Horner told Dutch website RacingNews365. “His performance last season was great, and his performance in the races was very, very strong.
“I think he can push Max more than Albon was able to last season. Hopefully, that will give us better, combined strength to fight Mercedes,” he added.
Strange reunification
After Perez signed for Red Bull, it was revealed that he had first worked with Horner 12 years ago, during his second year in the GP2 with Arden, a team owned by Horner’s family.
“In his first year in GP2, he was always stronger in the races than in qualifying,” said the Red Bull boss. “He had the determination never to give up.
“Sergio was like a young dog with a bone. I think that has become his trademark for him in terms of racing. It is, therefore, no coincidence that he managed to achieve podium places in mediocre cars that actually did not belong on the podium”,
“He is very determined during the races, and his tyre management is excellent. Sergio is now at a stage in his career where he is an excellent all-rounder.”
With his years of experience, Perez will be an advanced challenge to Verstappen with a car encompassing similar capabilities.
