“There are things like that which Daniel isn’t going to know”- Lando Norris talks about taking charge of McLaren team at a young age.
Lando Norris presently is the most experienced with McLaren’s Modus Operandi, as Carlos Sainz exit now onus upon him to act as a leader for the team even though he had spent only two years in the sport.
On the other hand, Daniel Ricciardo, who recently signed for McLaren, has decade long experience in F1. However, he would still be alien to McLaren’s technicalities, and never before drove on a Mercedes engine in F1, the task to settle in would be difficult.
That is where Norris had to step in as a leader of McLaren and work with engineers to guide them for the right car. “There are two sides to it. There is a guy with a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge which is coming to the team and is wanting to share that,” said Norris to GPFans Global.
“Then there is me who knows how the team works and knows what we have dealt with over the last three to four years, how things work in terms of what the car is capable of doing and the directions on the weekend.”
“There are things like that which Daniel isn’t going to know so it will be a mixture of both Daniel and myself having ideas and leading the way.”
Lead the team in 2020
With Sainz set to leave the team in 2021, McLaren stepped up its efforts to make Norris more responsible towards the team, which otherwise could have been delayed considering his age.
“There were a lot more debriefs and things that were led by myself, rather than Carlos, taking the car more in the direction I wanted it to be improved and thinking ahead to the future,” he said.
