“Signed Michael Jordan basketball card sells for $1.5 million”: New record for MJ collectibles set as Heritage Auctions breaks previous record by over $500k
Michael Jordan memorabilia are now red hot on the open market. A Mint 7 Jordan card was sold yesterday for nearly $1.5 million.
The card in question is a 1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey Michael Jordan card — one of only 23 ever produced. It was graded by PSA (one of the top names in authentication and card grading) as a “Near Mint 7”, while the signature quality was graded a “Near Mint 8.” It measures 3.5″ by 2.5″
The card is numbered 8/23. Most importantly, it features a clear signature and a piece of the actual jersey MJ wore during the legendary 1992 NBA All-Star game! Jordan was a starter for the Eastern Conference team in this particular All Star game. He tallied 18 points and 5 assists on that night.
Heritage Auctions was responsible for the auction of the card, and after 61 bids, it sold on Feb. 4 for $1.44 million!
How this Michael Jordan card sold for so much
The market for basketball cards, and basketball memorabilia in general, has become very lucrative of late. Rookie cards of Giannis and LeBron sold for over $1.8 million in August 2020 last year. A Fleer Michael Jordan Mint 10 card sold recently for over $800k.
The previous record price for a Jordan card was $915K — also auctioned off by Heritage a few months back — for the green-shaded 1997 Michael Jordan Metal Universe Precious Metal Gem card. The value of MJ items has EXPLODED since ESPN’s series “The Last Dance” aired in April and May of 2020.
