“I saw Red Bull as a startup team”- Adrian Newey explains what made his time at Red Bull different from Williams and McLaren.
Adrian Newey has been hailed as the architect behind Red Bull’s magnificent success in Formula 1. Though before partnering with the Austrian side, he was also associated with Williams and McLaren, where he also tasted success.
However, Newey feels that he enjoyed his time at Red Bull more than because it challenged him, and since it was a new team back then, he had a scope of being dynamic.
“I saw Red Bull as a startup team, something that really appealed to me,” Newey told Dutch magazine Formule 1 in an interview. “Nobody knew where things would go with Red Bull, but the first goal was to get to a position where we could win races.
“From there, we would see. So the success we’ve had over the years has been gratifying for me.”
Red Bull felt like his own child to him.
As mentioned above, he also had impressive spells with two other F1 teams with a glorious past, yet he felt connected with Red Bull, as he was not just an employee over here.
“Williams and McLaren are great teams, but even though I was valued there, I always felt like an employee. For Red Bull, I feel a lot more responsibility. I even have a bit of a fatherly feeling with the team,” Newey concludes.
At the start of the last decade and fall of the 2000s, Red Bull with Sebastian Vettel dominated for four years. At that time, Red Bull hardly had a competition, with Mercedes yet to bloom, and Ferrari and McLaren declined.
Though Ferrari pushed itself up in the following years, McLaren soon saw its own problems, until it reignited their form in 2019, and finally ended third on the table last year.
