“We are so excited that we can win races together”- Zak Brown on progress in Mercedes relationship
“We are so excited that we can win races together”- Zak Brown views a bright future with Mercedes after the power unit purchase.
McLaren has deepened its relationship with Mercedes ahead of the 2021 season by deciding to use the power unit manufactured by the Brackley based team.
Until the end of 2020, McLaren relied on Renault’s power unit and was the sole customer of the French outfit. But the leadership at McLaren feel that it is time to upgrade after an impressive 2020 end.
The team principal Andreas Seidl feels that Mercedes power unit is the best on the grid, and it would suit his team’s interests. Reflecting on it, Zak Brown, McLaren’s CEO, feels that with this partnership, both teams can win multiple races.
“We have a lot of friends and families in the Brixworth [Mercedes power unit department] section. I think they’re just as excited,” he said to the Motorsport.com.
“So we are so excited that we can win races together. And hopefully, we can push them. Whoever in the front will probably be the Mercedes Grand Prix team.”
Daimler is a fan of McLaren
While visioning a bright future with Mercedes, Brown has also revealed that the parent company of Mercedes’ (Daimler) CEO- Oli Källenius is a big fan of McLaren.
“We are very excited. We have a great history with Mercedes,” he said. “Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler, is a big McLaren fan and has been with McLaren in the past,” he said.
McLaren headed in the right direction.
After a few years of struggle, McLaren is now on an upward trajectory. Last year’s performance was a testimony to their hard work after several setbacks, which brought the team from the pinnacle to the bottom tier of the sport.
The tea has a balanced duo of youth and experience in Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz; it remains to be seen how well the team does in 2021.
